[世界賽車比賽] Silverstone facts and figures

It has taken £5million to complete the new section of Silverstone that will be used for the first time in Formula One throughout the British Grand Prix weekend.
But there are a host of other significant numbers that have gone into the redevelopment, and even more that go into the making of the weekend.
Here, is all the facts you need to know about the event.
* The new circuit is now 3.66 miles, or 5.89km, 750 metres longer than the old track and which is expected to approximately add four seconds to a lap time, which is projected at one minute 23.13secs.
* There are now 18 turns, with the projected average speed likely to be around 157mph/252kph.
* It took 108,000 man hours, between November 2009 and March 2010, to complete the new grand prix circuit.
* 31,000 square metres of tarmac and 33,000 tonnes of asphalt was used for the new sections.
* 5,100 metres of debris fencing (of which 4,000m is new) and 7,000m metres of triple Armco (of which 4,500m is new) has been erected or re-positioned around the new circuit.
* 150,000 cubic metres of earth has been excavated and moved to form raised banks.
* 22,000 square metres of new spectator areas have been created.
* 58,000 square metres of asphalt and 56,000 square metres of gravel have gone into the new run-off areas.
* 3,000m of new kerbs have been laid, along with 4,000 square metres of astro turf, whilst 2,700 cubic metres of concrete has been used around the site.

* For the fans there are 16 giant screens dotted around the track.
* There will be over 860 highly-trained volunteer marshals on duty, which includes 405 spectator marshals, 388 incident marshals and 70 flag marshals. There are also breakdown and rescue personnel, start-line marshals, incident officers and pit marshals.
* Throughout the three days of the grand prix, a team of more than 100 medical staff, including 40 doctors, will be on site for both competitors and visitors.
* 14 people are employed to cut the grass at Silverstone, as well as 15 painters to keep the place looking smart.
* The amount of TV cable laid out around Silverstone for the race would stretch from Dover to Calais and back.
* An estimated 20,000 bottles of mineral water, 10,000 bottles of wine, and approximately 8,024 bottles of champagne will be consumed during the weekend, with approximately 13,340 pieces of cake eaten.
* 3,583 catering staff will be on hand to serve, which includes 127 chefs.

The changing face of Silverstone

With a new track layout awaiting the drivers at Silverstone this weekend, there's been plenty of homework for the Renault F1 Team to do. The circuit is now 745 metres longer and lap times will be around the 90-second mark, some 10 seconds slower than last year. Over the past few months, the team's engineers have carried out hundreds of simulations to get to grips with the challenge ahead.

In fact, simulation work has become an essential tool for any F1 team, even when preparing for circuits we've been racing on for years. Using complex computer models, it allows the engineers to evaluate set-up options before arriving at the circuit in order to maximise the track time available during free practice.


"We received the circuit map showing the new Silverstone layout about three months ago," explains Nick Chester, Head of Performance Systems. "The first step was to digitise the map and add a driving line to the circuit, which we obviously had to estimate for the new part of the track. Then we started evaluating different settings on the virtual car, changing parameters such as wing levels, suspension settings and gear ratios to try and work out a good base set-up for the start of the weekend."



So what impact will the five new corners have on the car's set-up this weekend?
"In terms of downforce levels, it's difficult to make a comparison with last year because the car has evolved so much, but we're not expecting a massive change to the set-up," says Chief Race Engineer, Alan Permane. "Our simulations show the average speed will be slightly higher at 230 km/h compared to 227 km/h in 2009, and the percentage of the lap spent at full throttle has also increased from 69% to 70%."

So, can the simulations tell us whether the new arena section has hit the sweet spot?
"On paper it certainly looks like there could be a couple of overtaking opportunities, Turn 16 is a good opportunity because there is a long drag from the low-speed turn 14, and turn 15 will be taken easily flat out. Turn 13 is also a possibility for overtaking, but it will depend how closely the cars can follow each other through turn 11 because turn 12 will be another flat-out corner. We expect turn 11 to be flat out on low fuel, but far more challenging with a heavy car."



The simulation work carried out by the team has also shown up the extra demands on the brakes compared to 2009. Although the percentage of the lap spent braking has reduced by 0.3%, the energy going through the braking system will be 2.3kW greater on the new layout with the big stops into turns 13 and 16.

Yet, no matter how accurate your simulations, there are some things they simply can't predict. Variables such as grip levels, bumps in the road and kerb characteristics cannot be known until the cars take to the track, so the simulations rely on average values. Likewise, the finer details set-up comes down to driver feel and there's no computer programme in the world that even comes close to an F1 driver's brain. So while our simulation tools set us on the right path, the real work will begin when practice starts on Friday morning.
