'I leapt from the wagon and started running across the roadway. There was a group of us running and dodging oncoming traffic. When I looked back there was a piece of the crane about 30ft long, lying by my truck. I'll never come closer to death.' The blaze sent choking black smoke spiralling into the air. Firemen reported seeing it a mile away.

Station Officer Bruce Grain, one of the first firemen to arrive, said the scene was one of 'absolute chaos'. 'The helicopter was still alight and part of the rotor blade was on the roof of nearby buildings,' he said.

As he spoke, the fog and low cloud that had obscured the top of the crane for much of the morning lifted. Then, just as quickly, it came back. Once again, the top of the tower was rendered almost invisible.
