One glaringly obvious name has lingered on the free-agent board throughout the summer, and it has finally been removed—Brazilian guard Leandro Barbosa has signed a one-year deal with the Boston Celtics.
Barbosa had long been rumored to be a possible addition for the Lakers, but he could not reach a deal in LA.
Leandro Barbosa has averaged 12.5 points per game in his nine seasons in the NBA.
Back in August, representing his country in the Olympics, Barbosa told Sporting News, “I want to go to a place where we can win, that is my biggest goal right now. I want to play for a team that can win a championship.”
The Celtics, of course, have a tough road to a championship, given they’d have to get through the Miami Heat. But adding Barbosa is another block in the rebuilding of Boston's bench. Ray Allen bolted to the Heat in the summer, but in his wake, the Celtics brought in Jason Terry, Courtney Lee and now, Barbosa.
Barbosa is primarily a scorer who can occupy some minutes at point guard. He averaged 11.1 points on 42.5 percent shooting while splitting time between Toronto and Indiana last year.
With shooting guard Avery Bradley still recovering from shoulder surgery, Barbosa should get a chance to play early in the year. Once Bradley returns, though, Barbosa figures to be a fifth guard in Boston.
