Retired Colonel Richard Kemp, a former UK commander in Afghanistan, said the sudden deployment of additional troops will hit them 'very hard indeed'.

The armed forces would carry out the task 'extremely well, extremely professionally and with a smile on their face', he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme, adding they would not regard it as trivial.

This morning it emerged that G4S made repeated assurances to ministers just two weeks ago that they would be able to supply all the guards they promised to deliver.

Mrs May distanced the government from the firm saying that its contract was with Games organisers Logoc which would be responsible for imposing penalties. Last night, it was reported it had been penalised £50,000 a day per venue for not meeting staffing levels. Locog did not comment on the claim.

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said the situation looked like 'another Home Office shambles', with G4S falling 25 per cent short of its contract. The problems come on top of long queues at Heathrow airport and other problems with border staff, Ms Cooper added.

The move to recruit troops, a fortnight before the Opening Ceremony, is a major embarrassment for Locog and G4S, who many senior police officers blame for the shambles.

Home Office minister James Brokenshire said that the problem about the shortfall of guards - needed to conduct physical searches, operate X-ray machines and carry out perimeter searches at the Games - first arose 'about a fortnight ago'.

The defence cuts - to be completed by the end of the decade - will see the regular Army cut from 102,000 to 82,000 while the Territorial Army will be doubled to 30,000 to give a combined force of 112,000.

The Olympics will be an attractive target for terrorists and so-called lone wolves may pose the greatest threat, experts said.

Jonathan Evans, director general of the Security Service, said there was no doubt some terrorist groups had considered whether they could pull off an attack on Britain this summer.

While the Games are not expected to be an easy target, there is 'no such thing as guaranteed security'.

'The dog you haven't seen may turn out to be the one that bites you,' he said in a rare speech last month.

Lone individuals sympathetic to al Qaeda's cause are believed to be one of the major concerns being considered by the security services and police in the run-up to the Games.

Will Hartley, head of the IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre, said: 'The threat posed by so-called 'lone wolf' terrorists - who act independently rather than as part of a militant group - is of particular concern to the security services, in part because the threat is so hard to quantify.tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb$ I3 d+ \4 w  L* a

'The potential harm such individuals can cause was amply demonstrated by the combined improvised explosive device (IED) and small-arms rampage perpetrated by Anders Breivik in Norway in July 2011, in which 69 people were killed.'& c$ n9 y: b9 s2 W

He pointed to a number of lone wolf attacks in the UK in recent years, including the incident when Roshonara Choudhry stabbed Labour's Stephen Timms twice in the stomach at his surgery in 2010 after watching extremist sermons online.tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb3 u5 A( S) c, ]$ w. k

Police and intelligence officials are understood to have picked up an increase in chatter, but there is not thought to be any intelligence of a credible plot to attack the Games.

In planning for the Olympics, it was presumed the level would be at the second highest, severe, which was last in place last July.

All leave has been suspended at MI5 to ensure the service has its full complement of some 3,800 staff for the Olympics, double the number it had a decade ago after the September 11 terror attacks.

But while the risk of disruption is high, it is thought that any such operations are extremely unlikely to pose a deliberate threat to life, he said.
