Does anyone know what is I/O device error

I have a hard drive in my old computer. I put the old hard drive into the external box and connect with my new computer; However the computer is said 'F:\is not accessible" "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device". Does anyone know what is my hard drive's problem and how to fix it that I can get back my folder from this hard drive. Thank you very much!

Few questions:
the old drive was working well in your old computer?
the format of that old drive is IDE or something?
the external box maybe require two usb cables, for power supply and data transfer
try plug-in the old drive in the back panel of your computer, since the front panel of your new computer maybe occupied which provide inadequate power supply to all drive
